Supervisor of Special Education
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited institution.
- Certification as a Supervisor Special Education; Elementary Principal or Secondary Principal.
- Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in education. Preferable to have working knowledge in the areas of special education, school age programs, and mental health services.
- A broad background and/or knowledge in special education with working knowledge of all areas of exceptionality.
- Any alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Directors may find appropriate and acceptable.
Job Goal:
- To provide leadership and direction in the coordination and development of special education and school age programs. To maintain and monitor compliance under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and all school mandates. To provide leadership in the development and programming of curriculum to meet state standards and rigor to meet the needs of a diverse learning community. To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills in the operation of school age programs and services.
Examples of Duties:
- Coordinates and supervises academic supports and educational programs within the Maple Avenue Campus.
- Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all board policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining classes and services within the Maple Avenue Campus. Provide input and assist the Director of Special Education in the development of budgets, state reports, and grant development.
- Coordinates inventories, requisitioning, and distribution of supplies.
- Maintains a system of record keeping.
- Provides supportive supervision for teachers and paraprofessionals working in all areas of programming within the Maple Avenue Campus.
- Assists in the administration of recruiting, interviewing, selecting and recommending to the Board the appropriate professionals and support personnel for the Maple Avenue Campus educational programs.
- Work in conjunction with the IU29 Education Services Department in formulating and maintaining a curricular improvement.
- Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to board policy, affording due process to the right of students.
- Assists in the development and implementation of teacher orientation and in-service.
- Formulates and administers a comprehensive, modern program for the Maple Avenue Campus programs, with current academic and behavioral practices.
- Provides on-going evaluation of existing programs and staff as to their effectiveness.
- Coordinates and participates in the development of procedures for screening and diagnosis of student needs and programs.
- Coordinates procedures for student programming with district LEAs.
- Coordinates procedures for integration of students transitioning to district programs.
- Participates in meetings for the benefit of school age students.
- Exercises decisive leadership in crisis situations.
- Assumes responsibilities for own professional growth and development and participates in local and state meetings relevant to position.
- Keeps the Director of Special Education informed of the school’s activities and problems by maintaining close communications.
- Maintains current working knowledge of IDEA and all school mandates, and applies this knowledge to the programming at the Maple Avenue Campus.
- Organize, distribute, and supervise the administration of state and local assessments.
- Other duties as assigned.

Method of Evaluation:
- The Supervisor of Special Education shall be evaluated in writing at the conclusion of each school year in accordance with provision of the Board’s policy on evaluation of administrative personnel.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervision of programs within the Maple Avenue Campus, all professional/non-professional personnel assigned to school age programs, and school office secretaries.
Terms of Employment:
- The Supervisor of Special Education shall be employed for twelve (12) months per year. Salary and work calendar are negotiable and will be established by the Board of Education.

- This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done mainly indoors but could include out.
