Qualifications

  • Minimum – Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Instructional I or II.
  • Program Specialist ESL Certificate or commitment to complete Program Specialist ESL Certificate requirements (Required)

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Create a cultural awareness and knowledge of multicultural and multilingual learners and families.
  • Understand and implement the current methods and techniques based on Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) principles in working with culturally and linguistically diverse students/families.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of curricular and instructional activities for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Implement the adaptations required for learners with diverse needs.
  • Select and design teaching resources and lesson plans based on individual differences in language proficiency and the dominant language testing of ELs.

Responsibilities:

  • Possess a knowledge of various cultures, and their comparisons, as related to our communities, businesses, languages, education, etc…
  • Facilitate the English Learners’ (EL) family understanding of and collaboration with ESL and other school staff.
  • Possess knowledge and deliver the required, extensive family involvement opportunities to assist in the development of the ELs’ projected service plan.
  • Use computer technology and graphics to facilitate EL student learning.
  • Assist EL students in learning communication methods and practices to assist their verbal and non-verbal understanding, skills, and attitudes.
  • Provide meaningful learning content to support the ELs’ culture and community diversity.
  • Employ various communications, instructional methods, and strategies to meet the specific instructional needs of ELs in their learning process.
  • Provide and strengthen opportunities to permit students to work collaboratively in small groups.
  • Develop the capacity to design and develop EL programs and service plans to teach language through the use of content, connections, and community concepts.
  • Use effective measurements of the ELs’ success in language acquisition and content learning.
  • Understand and implement multiple evaluation techniques to assess the various curricular and instructional activities used for EL students.
  • Assess the school’s support services aiding the ELs’ requirements.
  • Provide regular parental involvement in working with the interpretation and assessment of the EL child’s accomplishments and needs.

  • ESL Coordinator

Method of Evaluation:

  • The ESL Program Instructor shall be evaluated annually during the school year based on the policies of the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit Board of Directors

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time
  • Mileage compensated from assignment to assignment
  • No travel compensation from home to 1st assignment or last assignment to home
  • Based on ESL experience and certification status.

  • This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done mainly indoors but could include outside tasks.
